Benjamin Banneker was one first astronomers in the United States and one of the first credited African American astronomers. His expertise on the subject enabled him to make predictions about space, time, and agriculture. He spent his life studying and sharing his knowledge and inventions with the world.

St. Patrick’s Day is a holy day honoring the patron saint, St. Patrick of Ireland. This day filled with Irish food, scripture reading, and merriment.
Here are 10 facts about Benjamin Banneker.
- Although born in the time of slavery, Benjamin Banneker was born a free man because his mother was free.
- He was born in Virginia on November 9, 1731
- He loved numbers and enjoyed reading as a child.
- He was encouraged to write and pursue an education by his mother.
- He invented the Almanac and published a copy each year until he died.
- He invented a wooden clock.
- He designed the full layout of Washington D.C., which was then built by slaves.
- He was the first Black man to receive a presidential appointment.
- He worked throughout his life to disprove that Black people were inferior to white people.
- He died in 1806.
Although many of his predictions for agriculture and astronomy and even his inventions were greatly used during his time and still continue to be used now, little acknowledgment is attributed to Benjamin Banneker.
