10 Facts About Sea Life

Happy World Sea Life Day!!!  Don’t you just love the ocean?  The ocean is one of the most beautiful wonders of the world, both full of life and creating life.   It is so heartbreaking to know that humans continue to pollute and destroy it as well as the life it contains.   In honor of the majesticness that is the sea, we have a freebie that you can download and use in your homeschool program or classroom.

Here are 10 amazing facts about the ocean and sea life

  1. 70% of the earth is made of water. As earth beings, our bodies are also composed of around 50% water.
  2. The majority of life on Earth is aquatic.
  3. Dolphins are not fish.
  4. Only 5% of the world’s oceans have been explored by humans.
  5. Male seahorses carry the babies.
  6. Jellyfish are some of the oldest ocean species. They have existed for over 650 million years.
  7. About 70%of the oxygen we breathe is produced by the oceans.
  8. Ocean tides are caused by the Earth rotating while the Moon and Sun’s gravitational pull acts on ocean water.
  9. The sea is home to the world’s largest living structure, called the Great Barrier Reef.
  10. The world’s longest mountain chain is underwater.

How awesome is that? We all need to do our part and take an effort into cleaning up the oceans on our planet.  Once they are gone, our lives will also cease.

Want to know how you can help?  Try these:

  • Stop using plastic straws
  • Use canvas instead of plastic bags
  • If you do use plastic bags, make sure to reuse these as often as you can.  When you cannot use them any longer, give them new life by making crocheted bags, area rugs, or other useful household items.
  • Join a local clean up effort or volunteer to clean up your local beaches
  • Make sustainable seafood choices
  • Use biodegradable and organic foods, cleaning products, and household materials.
  • Consume and waste less
  • Support companies that make ocean-friendly products
  • Join an ocean conservation group
  • Patronize sea life reserves (These are not like Seaworld where animals are the attractions.  These are places where education is the foundation and trained staff offer segments that teach customers how to make better choices, conserve, and rescue).
