Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!!! There are so many misconceptions about the holiday. It is unfortunate that it has become such a commercialized day in the United States highlighting huge amounts of alcohol consumption. But, it is about so much more than that.

St. Patrick’s Day is a holy day honoring the patron saint, St. Patrick of Ireland. This day filled with Irish food, scripture reading, and merriment. Here are 12 facts about St. Patrick’s Day:
- Patrick’s Day is a Christian feast celebration in Ireland.
- Patrick’s Day occurs every year on March 17, 2019
- The day was created in honor of Saint Patrick. His death is commemorated by the holiday.
- As a child, Patrick was kidnapped from his home and forced into slavery in Ireland, where he spent 6 years.
- While in captivity, his faith grew.
- He ran away and boarded a ship to escape to freedom. He was able to get back to Britain where he was eventually reunited with his family.
- While in Britain, he was called to return to Ireland and convert the Irish to Christianity.
- He wrote two books: Confesso and Letter to Coroticus.
- Corned beef and cabbage are a traditional meal for the holiday.
- Despite the popularity of beer being drunken on this day in the United States, it has nothing to do with the holiday in Ireland.
- Patrick is credited for bringing Christianity to Ireland.
- The shamrock is Ireland’s national flower.
