Welcome to Our Learning Curve’s Book of the Week Series. Each week, we will share with you some of our favorite books to read for children from grades K-8th grade. The books selected include a wide range of characters and are representative of persons from multi-cultural backgrounds, especially those not traditionally showcased.

Reading is not only fundamental, but it is also fun! Even the most reluctant readers can find a book (whether a traditional hardcover or softcover, an ebook, or a comic) that they are interested in with exposure to the possibilities. This series was created to encourage reading. Consistently taking the time for reading each day not only builds a child’s confidence and their skills in reading, but also their critical thinking skills, interest, and vocabulary as well. As a rule of thumb, every child should spend at least 30 minutes a day reading (other than textbooks or worksheets).

Tips for making reading fun:
- Create a relaxing atmosphere (This could be as simple as a warm seat at the kitchen table with herbal tea or hot chocolate. Or it could be a corner in a room with a bean bag chair or other lounging furniture).
- Have discussions about the reading
- Allow children to act our or recreate scenes from what they have read
- Have the children to take notes as they read
- Use fun pens or pencils
While using the Book Report or Activity Book, these may be helpful:
- Additional Books on the subject/topic
- Crayons
- Markers
- Erasable Pens
- Scissors
