Homeschooling Black Children

For many black parents, and Latino ones too, homeschooling was the ideal choice when faced with a system that does not work for them.  A system that labels them and treats them as a number.  A system where it is easy to get lost.  Homeschooling provides these families not only a way in which they can efficiently educate their children but also protect them from the systematic racism that prevails in the public school system in the United States.  Not only are funds disproportionately allocated, but the chosen curriculum also leaves out diversity.  And of course, when concerns are brought up, these families are made to feel as if asking for representation makes them problematic.  I’ve been on both ends of this, both as a teacher and as a parent.  It didn’t even take a full year of public school for me to realize that it wasn’t for my family.
